Columbia River Gorge - Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, OR. and WA. On October 30, 1805, the expedition entered the Gorge of the Columbia River, which cuts through the Cascade Mountain Range. The landscape changed again from dry and barren to moist and forested. They were also in a section of the Columbia where they encountered more rapids, requiring more portages.
